Paula Badosa and Garbine Muguruza created a media storm in Spani after announcing their withdrawal from the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
The withdrawal came on the same day that the duo officially booked places in the WTA Finals that are set to run a few days after the Billie Jean King Cup Finals concluded. Both players released statements after the news explaining that the current scheduling made it almost impossible to play both events which was not well received in Spain.
Many pointed out to their contemporary Krejcikova who will play both events despite a tight schedule and having to fly from Prague to Guadalajara on a short turnaround. Davis Cup team member and longstanding pro Feliciano Lopez defended the decision saying he understood why they made it and now the Spanish Team Captain also spoke on the matter.
He said:
"All of the players have responded very well and in an excellent manner. The moment we got the news that Paula and Garbine couldn’t be with us, we had to just look forward, working for what’s coming ahead and we are grateful for all the players that are here with us. All the players are important for me."
One player who will cherish being there is Carla Suarez Navarro who will say goodbye to tennis officially after this event. On that chance Suarez Navarro said:
"I’m really happy to be here one more time to represent Spain. This is my last one so I really want to enjoy every moment with the team, on the court, off-court. I’ve known Anabel from a long time ago, we spent a lot of time together, we have a lot of emotions in this competition, and we feel good."
