After a shocking first round upset at the 2025
Wimbledon Championships, tennis star
Jessica Pegula may finally be showing signs of burn out, according to former WTA pro
Andrea Petkovic.
Pegula kicked off her Wimbledon campaign after lifting the Bad Homburg title a few days earlier. The American defeated former World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the final, but fell to Italian
Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her opening round match at SW19 just two days later.
Most players experience some sort of emotional tiredness, says Petkovic
In an appearance on the Rennae Stubbs podcast, Petkovic spoke on Pegula's mannerisms during her first round match that indicated the American may be mentally exhausted after a grueling first half of the season.
"Physically, she's such a fit player," said the former World No.9. "Most of them, I don't think it's physically (tired), but I do think you get this kind of emotional tiredness. And granted, these tennis players are used to it, but I think we've seen it here a lot. There are a lot of players that look burned out, that have talked about being burned out. There are so many tournaments on the schedule.
"We've talked about it plenty of times. Jess (Pegula) is usually calm. Yes, she sometimes gestures and you see it on her face if you know her well, that's she's not happy. But she rarely ever shows outward emotion. You could see a lot in her yesterday, particularly after being a set down."
Pegula would admit after the match that she did not play badly, and would give credit to her Italian opponent for playing better at the end of the day.
