Former US Open Champion Bianca Andreescu is set to make her 2022 debut on the WTA Tour at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
Andreescu hasn’t hit the court on tour since cutting her 2021 season short after the rescheduled Indian Wells Masters in September of last year. The 2019 Flushing Meadow champion has been granted a wildcard into the WTA indoor clay court event at Stuttgart.
The 21-year old will be spared qualifying after being given one of three main draw wildcards. The other two slots went to German players Laura Siegemund and Jule Niemeie. Andreescu dropped updates onto her social media this week that suggested she was soon to return before the Stuttgart organizers confirmed the Canadian’s wildcard entry.
On the brink of dropping out of the top 120 players, the former World No 4 has been absent from the game due to what might be termed tour fatigue or a mental health break. Andreescu felt she needed time to rest, reset and recover and her cheerful if brief social media clips suggest she is ready to go out and enjoy her tennis again.
Her addition to the field bolsters an already impressive field that features 17 of the world’s top 20 women.
