Bianca Andreescu (No. 228) overcame former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka (No. 125) 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 at the WTA 250 s’ Hertogenbosch Open. The quarter-final clash featured two former US Open champions in a tightly contested match marked by a rain delay and a high level of play from both competitors.
The first rain delay came after just three games in the first set, with both players holding their service games and Osaka leading 2-1. Although they attempted to resume play later, rain once again delayed the match for several minutes.
Upon the definitive return to the match, the players remained on serve at 3-3 without any break points contested. The break came in the 7th game in favour of Andreescu after two opportunities, which was enough for her to take the set 6-4, saving a break point against her in the final game of the set.
In the second set, Osaka displayed an extremely high level of play from the outset, capitalizing on Andreescu’s second serves to play aggressively and dominate the match for 20 minutes. The Japanese player secured two breaks from three opportunities and was impeccable on her serve to take a 5-0 lead.

The former world No. 1 faltered at the end of the set, and Andreescu regained one of the breaks, though it only served to reduce the lead, as Osaka had no trouble closing out the set 6-3 in her next service game, sending the match to a third set.
The final set remained balanced for much of the time, with both players serving above 60% on their first serve. In the 6th game, Osaka committed a couple of unforced errors that proved costly, allowing Andreescu to secure a break and take a 4-2 lead.
When it seemed that Andreescu would win the match, Osaka showed her best tennis to recover the break and win three consecutive games, which tied the Canadian 5-5. Both defended their serve to take everything to a tight tie-break, in which after being 3-3, Andreescu won the last 4 consecutive points and won the match 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3).She will face Dalma Galfi (No. 138) in the semi-finals, who defeated Aleksandra Krunic (No. 400) in straight sets.
