Aryna Sabalenka along with her doubles partner Elise Mertens won the Australian Open in doubles and that allowed her to become the top rated WTA doubles player.
It was the 2nd Grand Slam title for the pairing of Sabalenka and Mertens as they have previously won the US Open in 2019. That victory allowed the 22-year old Belarussian to seize the number one spot in the WTA doubles rankings. She becomes the 44th woman to ever do it and on that achievement she said:
“I am truly honoured to become the new WTA World No.1 in doubles. I want to thank my coach and everyone in my team, as well as my amazing partner Elise – they have all been incredible and I couldn’t have done this without them. I will remember this day for the rest of my life.”
WTA Chairman and CEO Steve Simon commented on the occasion by saying:
“Aryna has reached the pinnacle of the sport in doubles by securing the coveted WTA World No.1 ranking. Congratulations to Aryna on this special moment as she is truly deserving of her position at the top of the game.”
She replaces Su-Wei Hsieh who held the position for 31 weeks. We congratulate her and wish her more success on the court.
