Former world number one Ashleigh Barty is set to play an exhibition match on the Wimbledon court. The court, located in the heart of London, is famous for its glorious history and is regarded as one of the most prestigious places to play tennis.
Surprisingly, Barty retired from sports at the age of 26 and is set to return to Wimbledon for an exhibition doubles match. Wimbledon confirmed the development in a post on its official Instagram account. The date for the event was not disclosed in the post.
Barty is a former world number one who had a very good career despite deciding to quit at a very young age. She finished her career after winning three major titles. Her first Grand Slam victory was in 2019 when she lifted the French Open title after beating Markéta Vondrousova in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-3.
Two years later, in 2021, she lifted the Wimbledon title after beating Karolína Pliskova in the final with a score of 6–3, 6–7(4–7), 6–3. Her last major triumph came in January of 2022 when she won the Australian Open on her home soil after beating America’s Danielle Collins in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
Barty’s most disappointing outing came in the US Open, where she never managed to get past the fourth round. However, she lifted the US Open doubles title in 2018 with her partner CoCo Vandeweghe, defeating Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic in the final with a score of 3–6, 7–6(7–2), 7–6(8–6).
Barty also represented Australia in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, where she lifted the Bronze medal in the mixed doubles category. She and her partner, John Peers, won the tie courtesy of a walkover over the Serbian pair of Novak Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic.
