Ashleigh Barty wins Miami Open 2021 after Bianca Andreescu retires in 2nd set

Ashleigh Barty won the Miami Open 2021 after Bianca Andreescu retired in the 2nd set due to an ankle injury.
What started as a shaky event for Barty ultimately ended with another Miami Open 2021 trophy. The defending champion went back to back at the Masters after winning it in 2019. Her opponent Andreescu did not play her best tennis today. She quickly found herself down 0-3 before pulling a break back to make it 2-3.
She was broken once more in the opening set which Barty won with 6-3. After that things got worse for Andreescu rather quickly. In the first game of the 2nd set, she would roll her ankle injuring it. Feeling significant pain and unable to move properly she would go down 0-2 at the start of the set.
After losing her serve for the 2nd time in the set and going down 0-3 Andreescu called an MTO. The medical personal tried their best but it was apparent quickly that she would not be able to continue playing in full capacity.
After Barty quickly won the next game to take a 4-0 lead Andreescu kneeled down behind the baseline in tears and decided to retire the match. It was a very disappointing ending for a stellar campaign by Andreescu where she demonstrated some of the tennis she played in 2019.
