Kazakhstan’s tennis star Elena Rybakina has received a tough opening round fixture in the China Open.
The 24-year-old is making a comeback after taking a small break when she withdrew from the recently concluded Japan Open because of illness.
Unfortunately for Rybakina¸ things are unlikely to get easier for her as she is now set to face China’s Zheng Qinwen in the opening round of the tournament. They will play on Monday.
Qinwen is rated one of the most highly-rated young women’s players from Asia currently playing in the circuit.
She recently played in the quarterfinal of the US Open and suffered a defeat to the current world number one Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
On the other hand, Rybakina had a difficult time during the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year where she lost to Romania’s Sorana Cirstea with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-4.
The Moscow-born had a mixed year in the Grand Slams this year. She started brightly in the Australian Open and lost to Sabalenka in the final with a score of 4–6, 6–3, 6–4.
After that, her only notable performance came in Wimbledon where her journey ended in the quarterfinal as she lost to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
