Despite a rain delay that saw both players make frequent trips back to the locker room, Paula Badosa remained focused as she stunned 15th seed Coco Gauff in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells tournament.
Badosa put on a superb display, cruising past the American in a 6-2 6-2 victory. The Spaniard was exemplary on serve, winning 80% of points on her first serve while saving the only break point faced.
There was uncertainty regarding whether the match would be completed on Monday, as inclement weather forced the players to seek shelter while Badosa was up 5-2 in the first set. The players returned to court shortly after, only to warm up and go back to their locker rooms as the rain resumed.
This halt in play could have altered the outcome, as Gauff could have regained her composure or Badosa could have lost focus. However, the World No.27 remained steady when play resumed, frustrating her American opponent with excellent defense and shotmaking. The Spaniard obtained two more breaks in the second set, before closing out the match after just 54 minutes.
