The new WTA season starts in Abu Dhabi on January 5, gathering an excellent field in the only event before February. Then, the players will travel to Melbourne and embrace a two-week quarantine.
Two WTA 500 tournaments at Melbourne Park will occur in the first week of February, just ahead of the season's first Major. The Australian Open will gather the strongest line-up, with all the world's best players entering the title chase. World no. 1 will return to action after skipping the entire season restart in 2020, keeping the no. 1 spot despite playing only a couple of tournaments in the season behind us thanks to her 2019 points.
Simona Halep should be among the favorites, reaching the semis in January and suffering a tight loss to Garbine Muguruza. Sofia Kenin stole the show in Melbourne this year, defeating all seven rivals to claim the maiden Major trophy. Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova seek the first Major crown, while Bianca Andreescu returns to competition after skipping the entire 2020 following a nasty knee injury from the 2019 WTA Finals.
Serena Williams is still waiting for that 24th Major crown, winning the last one at the Australian Open in 2017 and losing four finals in 2018 and 2019. The Roland Garros champion enters the draw from the top-20, looking to extend her run at Majors following an impressive run in Paris in October.
