Leylah Fernandez is out of Toronto as she lost in her 2nd match back to
Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-7(4) 1-6.
It was a solid match from Fernandez but not good enough to defeat one of the better players in the last couple of months. Haddad Maia lost to Fernandez earlier this year in Monterrey but got her revenge today in a very exciting affair. The opening set was interesting because Fernandez played really well to start however Haddad Maia got the lead.
The Brazilian was up 4-2 and held it until 5-4 when she served for the set. A set point was squandered and Fernandez broke back to make it 5-5. The joy lasted briefly as she dropped her serve once more to give Haddad Maia another go at serving out the set. The Brazilian once again failed, sending the match into the tiebreak but finally outplayed Fernandez there for good.
Both of them attacked the 2nd serve of the other one and both had a lot of success in that regard. Fernandez struggled immensely in the 2nd set and it started with her serve. As in the first set, Haddad Maia attacked the 2nd and she had a lot of success once more. One break happened early, another one later and the Brazilian finished it off 6-1.
