Number four seed Paula Badosa is out of the Toronto Masters after retiring against Yulia Putintseva down 5-7 0-1.
Badosa played a fairly strong event in San Jose last week but the Spaniard wasn't so fortunate in Toronto. It was always going to be a hard match for Badosa against Putintseva because that's how the Kazakh player plays. Long rallies, some more long rallies and then even longer rallies. It was on full display early in the match as games were long.
Badosa was able to take an early 3-1 lead but Putintseva battled back to make it 5-4. She even had a set point at that score but Badosa held firm for the 5-5 score. Eventually, Putintseva went on to outplay Badosa down the stretch to take the opening set 7-5. It was a 77-minute set that left Badosa feeling unwell. The Spaniard played one more game in the 2nd set but then retired from the match.
