Beatriz Haddad Maia books first WTA 1000 final over Pliskova

Karolina Pliskova failed to reach the final in Canada once more as Beatriz Hadda Maia got her first one with a 6-4 7-6(7) win.

A dream season of Haddad Maia continues with the Brazilian through to her maiden WTA 1000 final. The season started slow for her but consistent play got her to this point and she's going to make her top 20 debut on Monday. She can even improve further with a win but taking down Halep will be quite tough. This match was an interesting one.

Haddad Maia opened really well outplaying a very erratic Pliskova from the baseline easily. An early 3-1 lead became a 5-1 lead but things got complicated a bit when Pliskova found some rhythm later in the set. The Czech player pulled back one break but she did not have enough gas in the tank to complete the comeback.

That momentum from the last couple of games of the final set gave Pliskova enough to take a 3-0 at the start of the 2nd set. She held it comfortably for the majority of the set but dropped her serve in the worst possible moment at 5-3. Haddad Maia made it 5-5 and we ended up in a tiebreak.

It was a closely contested one but the Brazilian was on top for the majority of it. She squandered her first match point but converted the 2nd one for her maiden final.
