The match of the day in Saint Petersburg featured the world number 5 Bencic and hometown hopeful Kuznetsova. The world number 5 continued her run in St Petersburg and quest to win the Ladies Trophy 2020 with a 2-0 victory Against Kuznetsova. Kuznetsova who was born in Saint Petersburg had the crown on her side but failed to win the match.
The 1st set was a close affair as we needed the tiebreak to settle the score. The whole set lasted almost an hour with Bencic emerging as the winner 7-6(4). The first set was a roller coaster as both players struggled on their serve. Both surrenderer it twice due to below-average serving. Bencic was better in key moments and won it deservedly.
The second set was totally different. Both players served and played much better. We had to wait a long time before one player broke the serve of the other and it was Bencic who did it. That proved key as she would cruise to a 6-4 victory in the 2nd set. The final score was 7-6(4) 6-4 and Bencic moves on to the quarters.
It was a good display by the Swiss who is having a good season. She has yet to win a trophy this year and as the top seed in Saint Petersburg, she will have a chance here. A lot will depend on how she plays and so far she has been good.
