Bianca Andreescu is getting closer to a return to the WTA top 100. The former US Open champion extended her winning streak to six matches on Tuesday, defeating American Katherine Hui 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Querétaro Open. Fresh from winning the WTA 125 title in Rovereto, Italy, the Canadian has carried her momentum across the Atlantic and is already through to the second round in Mexico.
Andreescu needed just over an hour to overcome Hui, breaking her opponent's serve seven times in a match that featured plenty of opportunities on return. Although the Canadian also lost her serve three times, she remained in control and recovered quickly whenever Hui threatened to make the contest more competitive.
The 26-year-old arrived in Querétaro after an impressive week in Italy, where she won five consecutive matches to claim the Rovereto title. That run included a victory over Antonia Ružić, who was the top seed, before Andreescu defeated sixth seed Dominika Salková in the final. The back-to-back tournaments have given her a valuable opportunity to accumulate ranking points during the closing weeks of the season.
Now ranked around No. 127 in the live rankings, Andreescu is targeting a return to the top 100, a position she has not occupied since May 2025. The immediate task is to keep winning in Mexico, but her broader objective is to finish 2026 as high as possible and improve her chances of securing direct entry into Grand Slam main draws next season.
Andreescu enjoys Queretaro atmosphere as winning streak continues
The transition from indoor hard courts in Italy to outdoor clay in Mexico presented a different challenge, particularly given the altitude in Querétaro. Andreescu nevertheless adapted quickly, and after her victory over Hui, she was pleased with both her level and the atmosphere around the court.
“I think I played excellent tennis today,” the former world No. 4 said. “Obviously, the conditions are different from where I was last week, but I feel like I'm getting used to them. I also really like the crowd. I don't play just for myself; I play for them, so when they support me, it means a lot to me. The atmosphere is incredible.”
Andreescu also acknowledged that the altitude had an impact on the way the match played, requiring adjustments as she got accustomed to the conditions. The number of breaks reflected a contest in which neither player consistently dominated on serve, but the Canadian was ultimately more effective in the important moments.
“You can definitely feel it, so you have to make certain adjustments. But I think I managed that well. It was a match with a lot of breaks of serve."
After travelling from Italy to Mexico, Andreescu has little time to settle before facing another opponent, but her early performance suggests she has found a rhythm that could carry her deeper into the draw.
Australian Open qualification remains a key target for Andreescu
Andreescu's ranking recovery is particularly relevant given the difficulties she has faced accessing Grand Slam main draws in recent seasons. She has had to go through qualifying at several majors, including the French Open and Wimbledon, and failed to reach the main draw on most of those attempts. Her successful qualifying campaign at Wimbledon this year ended with a first-round defeat to Zhang Shuai.
The Canadian is also hoping to return to the Australian Open, where she has not competed since 2023. She has played the tournament three times, reaching the second round on each occasion, in 2019, 2021 and 2023. A stronger ranking heading into 2027 would give her a better chance of avoiding qualifying, although direct entry will depend on the ranking cutoff when the entry list is established.
For a player whose career has repeatedly been interrupted by injuries, maintaining physical consistency is just as important as collecting points. Andreescu has been active in recent months and has now added the Rovereto trophy to a growing run of competitive matches since August. Her victory over Hui extends that progress and gives her another chance to climb the rankings before the season ends.
Next up is Diletta Cherubini, the world No. 397, in the second round in Querétaro. Another victory would move Andreescu closer to No. 124 in the live rankings and keep her six-match winning streak alive. The top 100 remains a demanding target, but after her recent title in Italy and confident start in Mexico, Andreescu is giving herself a better chance of making the climb.
