Bianca Andreescu became one of the biggest victims of a rain-affected opening day at the Canadian Open, with the Canadian forced to wait for her first-round comeback after her match against Czech teenager Nikola Bartůňková was suspended due to weather conditions in Montreal.
The former US Open champion had received a wildcard into the WTA 1000 tournament and was scheduled to open her campaign against the 20-year-old Czech, currently ranked No. 42 in the world. However, after taking to the court at IGA Stadium, Andreescu’s return to action was interrupted as persistent rain forced organizers to suspend play.
The weather problems affected both Canadian Open events on Sunday, with the WTA tournament in Montreal and the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto facing delays. The situation mirrored the DC Open final in Washington, where rain also disrupted the scheduled championship match between Alex Eala and Jessica Pegula.
Andreescu’s return was one of the most anticipated storylines of the opening day, as the Canadian continues rebuilding after several injury setbacks in recent seasons. The 2019 US Open champion has struggled to regain consistency since her breakthrough Grand Slam triumph and was hoping for a positive start in front of the home crowd.
Rain causes major disruption in Montreal opening day
Rain had already been a concern for organizers before the tournament began, with National Bank Open tournament director Valérie Tétreault revealing that she had been monitoring forecasts for weeks ahead of the event.
“Every morning, I was looking at how things were shaping up,” Tétreault said according to The Canadian Press.
The opening day schedule was heavily affected, although the women’s draw managed to complete several matches. The men’s tournament in Toronto suffered a much bigger setback, with only two of 14 scheduled matches reaching completion in Montreal’s ATP event.

On the men’s side, China’s Shang Juncheng defeated Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 6-3, 6-3, while Spain’s Jaume Munar completed a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Australia’s Rinky Hijikata after a break in the weather allowed play to resume.
Several matches were postponed or left unfinished, including Nuno Borges against Aleksandar Kovacevic and Michael Zheng’s clash with Miomir Kecmanovic. The evening session was cancelled entirely, with local players Gabriel Diallo and Alexis Galarneau among those unable to begin their matches.
Several WTA seeds advance as Montreal avoids full washout
Despite the interruptions, the women’s draw produced several notable results on Sunday. Kamilla Rakhimova delivered one of the biggest surprises of the day by defeating former world No. 1 Venus Williams 6-4, 6-1.
The 45-year-old Williams was making another appearance on the WTA Tour as she continues her comeback, but Rakhimova controlled the match to secure one of the biggest wins of her career and move into the second round.
Qualifier Sara Bejlek also survived a difficult battle against Xiyu Wang, winning 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. The Czech teenager earned a second-round meeting against top seed Iga Swiatek, creating one of the most intriguing matchups of the next stage.
Another qualifier, Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima, advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Cristina Bucsa and secured a second-round clash against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
Camila Osorio also moved through after defeating Lucrezia Stefanini 7-6(6), 6-3, earning a meeting with 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. Spanish wildcard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro defeated Canadian Ariana Arseneault, while local favorite Katherine Sebov recorded the first Canadian women’s singles victory of the tournament by defeating Aoi Ito.
Sebov’s reward will be a second-round encounter against 10th seed Marta Kostyuk, as the Canadian contingent looks to take advantage of home support during the WTA 1000 event.
