Fans on
social media have noticed an image crop in the announcement of the
WTA Finals
in Cancun.
The recent
confirmation of the WTA Finals' location in Cancun has stirred reactions among
fans. With the event just two months away, the WTA has finally revealed that
the Mexican city will host the prestigious tournament.
The
tournament will feature the top eight players who have accumulated the most
points throughout the season. To promote the event, a photo shoot from the 2022
finals was used, but the presence of three players was notably removed,
specifically those who are furthest from qualifying.
The image
included
Iga Swiatek,
Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Ons
Jabeur, all of whom are currently within the top 8 (with Sabalenka and Swiatek
already qualified for the tournament).
Excluded
from the photo were Daria Kasatkina (ranked 13th), Maria Sakkari (ranked 15th),
and Caroline Garcia (ranked 25th), all of whom are currently distant from
contention for spots in the WTA Finals.
As of now,
in addition to the aforementioned top players,
Elena Rybakina, Marketa
Vondrousova, and Karolina Muchova would be the ones attending the tournament.
Jabeur would be the eighth qualifier if the race ended today, with a 500-point
difference from Madison Keys, who has had an impressive campaign in the US
Open.
Fans
reacted to the image Tennis Channel posted, which featured only five of the
players who participated in 2022:
“Cant
believe they just photoshopped everyone with no chance of qualifying out”
"The other three in current Top 8 are much way better actually. Those five plus Rybakina, Vondrousova and Muchova all are legit," some user wrote
"Nope, by shear luck the original will just crop. Still cruel,"
They just zoomed and centered the original photo. Caro Maria and Dasha were on the left and right sides of the photo anyways…"
