World No.6 Caroline Garcia was firing on all cylinders on Tuesday night, as she dispatched of Coco Gauff to secure her first win at the 2022 WTA Finals.
Garcia looked as focused as she'd ever been, racing past the World No.4 in a 6-4 6-3 victory. Both ladies were meeting for the second time in as many months, with Garcia recording another victory after prevailing in their US Open quarterfinal encounter in September.
Despite lacking a huge serve, Garcia employed her precision and consistency to frustrate her American opponent. After exchanging breaks early in the match, it was the Frenchwoman who maintained her focus to obtain a second break and escape with the first set.
The second set saw Garcia utilize some impressive serve placement, as she won 12 of 14 points behind her first serve. Although both ladies exchanged breaks, it was Garcia who once again relied on her mental fortitude to secure a second break, effectively ending the match and clinching victory after an hour and 18 minutes.
The race for qualification from the Tracy Austin Group is still wide open, with World No.1 Iga Swiatek cruising past Daria Kasatkina in the other group stage encounter.
