A very interesting matchup delivered a good fight as Leylah Fernandez took on Caroline Garcia but the French player proved too strong for the Canadian this time around at the Australian Open.
Garcia is continuing to play strong tennis into the new year and she secured another good win in Melbourne by beating Fernandez 7-6(5) 7-5. It was a tricky affair because Fernandez is really aggressive and her forehand can do a lot of damage in conditions like these. Garcia has her own weapons and she showed them here.
The serve in particular was crucial in big moments as she blasted 11 aces in an effort that also saw her add 40 winners to only 24 unforced errors. She was magnificent in crucial rallies saving 8 of 9 break points she faced while converting 2/3 Fernandez allowed on her serve. Garcia actually briefly trailed her opponent in the opening set but broke back immediately.
She was down 0-4 in the first set tiebreak too but managed to come back. There were a lot of missed chances by Fernandez in this one but Garcia stuck to it and outlasted her young opponent.
