Taylor Fritz won't be making a deep run in Australia his year as native player
Alexei Popyrin took him down in five sets 6-7(4) 7-6(2) 6-4 6-7(2) 6-2.
It was an incredible match that saw many twists and turns but native player Popyrin used the Australian crowd to his advantage. The Aussie player started the year well in Adelaide playing some inspiring tennis with a style that suits the courts well. An incredibly powerful serve and pretty powerful groundstrokes are all that you need and he had that consistency in his game that he generally doesn't have.
The match was quite close for the most part as we saw three tiebreaks so most were decided on a few balls. Fritz was generally a bit more aggressive attacking more often but also missing more often. The 3rd was kinda crucial because Popyrin played in superbly to take momentum to his side.
Fritz did come back in the 4th set which was the first set where Popyrin took initiative. He couldn't quite get it done as the American escaped in the tiebreak but he could do it in the final set. Electing to take matters into his own hands, Popyrin blasted 12 winners in the final set to take it 6-2. He had twice as many winners as Fritz in the final set.
