The French player played a really solid match to take down
Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-7(5) 6-1 who had moments in this match but ultimately didn't play well enough.
The match was a rather competitive one but for the most part, Garcia was able to hold things under control. These slower conditions gave enough time to both players to unload their groundstrokes but Garcia has more power and she's the far more consistent attacker which is why she won. She took an early break in the first set and held the lead pretty comfortably for the entire set.
She was particularly dominant on her own serve hitting it well and not allowing Fernandez any break points the entire set. Much of that continued in the second set as she once again didn't allow a single break point but she didn't serve as sharply. Less than 50 % of his first serves were hit but it was enough to get herself to the tiebreak.
Despite that, Fernandez was a bit more fortunate in that one taking it 7-5. It proved quite anticlimactic as Fernandez completely fell apart in the final set which has happened before this year. Garcia smashed her with ease 6-1 to advance to the next round.
