Caroline Wozniacki retires after 30 minutes in her first BJK Cup match post comeback from retirement. Was 0-6, 0-1* down to Sinja Kraus from Austria. Never looked like herself out there.
Caroline Wozniacki made her return to clay court action for the first time since her comeback and despite good recent results, the former World No.1 retired as it looked like she was about to get thrashed at the Billie Jean King Cup.
Wozniacki was 0-6, 0-1 down to Sinja Kraus from Austria and retired after only 30 minutes. Never looking herself on the courts of Oeiras, she is a vital cog to Denmark's efforts this week. She is playing in the World Group I for Denmark who will look to reach the Qualifiers. It is also vital for Wozniacki to seize this chance given that she wants to qualify for the Olympic Games.
But in her worst display since returning to the sport, she was bageled in the opening set and retired 1-0 down in the second as it looked like the unknown Austrian was going to ease to victory. Maria Sakkari and Jelena Ostapenko for Greece and Latvia are also among those in action this week at the Billie Jean King Cup. Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber and Iga Swiatek all play in the main qualifiers with the victors getting spots in the main Billie Jean King Cup Finals. But not the best start for Wozniacki.
