Claura Tauson won her 2nd WTA 250 trophy in 2021 with a win over 2019 champion
Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 4-6 6-4.
The WTA Luxembourg Open finished with a very good match between
Clara Tauson and Jelena Ostapenko. Tauson was looking to win her 2nd WTA 250 event in 2021 while Ostapenko was looking to make it two in a row in Luxembourg. Ultimately it was Tauson who prevailed in 3 sets after playing a more balanced style of tennis from start to finish.
Ostapenko played her typical ultra-aggressive style and it worked to a degree. She more or less had only one bad game in the first set and she lost her serve in that game. Tauson was able to hold on to the lead and win the opening set with 6-3. Ostapenko came back to win the 2nd set with 6-4 after playing some strong rallies on key points.
Unlike the first set where she did not have a single break point, she had two in the 2nd set and used one. She also saved the only break point she faced and that proved more than enough to win the 2nd set with 6-4. The 3rd set was a very interesting one and the most competitive one by far. Ostapenko took an early lead 2-1 and served for 3-1 but Tauson came right back.
From there we had a very competitive set but Tauson was able to hold her serve mostly with great timely serving. Ostapenko struggled with her return several times during the match and that cost her. At 5-4 for Tauson, Ostapenko played a bad game committing a few cheap errors and that was enough for Tauson to seal the deal.
