Coco Gauff and
Mirra Andreeva are likely on a semi-final collision course at the 2025
French Open and they took the latest steps towards it on Monday.
Gauff held off a spirited fightback from Ekaterina Alexandrova to advance to her fifth consecutive Quarter-Final 6-0, 7-5 in one hour and 22 minutes.
The 21-year-old is the fourth youngest to achieve that as she will aim for the big prize at the end of the week. She emulates Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf and Conchita Martinez. She has made the last eight every year since losing to Martina Trevisan on her main draw debut back in 2020.
It is a ninth major Quarter-Final overall for Gauff who now faces Madison Keys or Hailey Baptiste. Alexandrova superbly upped her level to attempt to match Gauff coming from a break down but she came back to win 12 out of the last 16 points of the match to claim the win.
Alexandrova hit only three winners to 15 unforced errors in the first set and a slow start was her undoing as Gauff took full advantage. She now holds a 4-1 lead against Alexandrova in their Head-to-Head and the usual spoiler in the Russian wasn't set to be one for Gauff today.
From tears to revenge for Andreeva
Mirra Andreeva left in tears last year as she was beaten by Daria Kasatkina in the final of Ningbo. But the 18-year-old is no longer suffering the same heartbreak as she avenged the defeat to Daria Kasatkina coming from 5-3 down in the second set and saving a set point to advance 6-3, 7-5.
Kasatkina is a close friend of Andreeva, the latter often appearing in her vlogs on YouTube but it was the sensational Andreeva that had the last laugh as she won through to become the youngest player to reach back-to-back Quarter-Finals since Martina Hingis.
She is yet to drop a set and now faces a tough test in Jessica Pegula or Lois Boisson before she then would likely reach Gauff.
