Garbine Muguruza had a very good year considering the injury that forced her to miss all of the clay season and her coach Conchita Martinez was honored with the WTA Coach of the Year award.
Conchita Martinez has been named WTA Coach of the Year, the governing body of women's tennis announced on Sunday, after helping Spaniard Garbine Muguruza to three titles this year. Muguruza won in Dubai and Chicago before the two-times Grand Slam champion claimed her first season-ending WTA Finals title in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The competition was a fierce one but Martinez's work with Muguruza especially towards the end of the year saw her get the nod over other coaches in contention. Tursunov did a brilliant job with Kontaveit as well but he only worked with the Estonian towards the end of the year leaving Martinez as the favourite to win it which she did. Last year's winner Piotr Sierzputowski was let go of Swiatek recently.
