Coco Gauff advances to US Open quarterfinal with win over Shuai Zhang

Coco Gauff played a fairly solid match of tennis to take down Shuai Zhang in two sets 7-5 7-5 and move on to the quarterfinal.

The American opened this match as a big favourite and she proved to be the better player in a well-contested match. Zhang played well at times and had her chances but overall she was simply not strong enough to keep up the necessary level to stay with Gauff.

Zhang jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but Guaff battled right back. She was aggressive all the time and attacked, even more, when the roof closed. Zhang matched the aggressiveness but fell behind 3-4 midway through. Gauff failed to confirm the break and we were tied at 4-4.

Eventually, the American outplayed Zhang 7-5 down the stretch. The 2nd set was fairly competitive as well and once again it was Zhang who was able to pull ahead 5-3. The Chinese player had the chance to finish off the set but failed and lost the break. She lost her serve once more to give Gauff the 6-5 lead and the American sent herself into the quarterfinal 7-5.
