Coco Gauff completed an unbelievable comeback against
Elise Mertens at the
Eastbourne International winning 0-6 7-6(4) 7-5.
It was an unbelievable match in Eastbourne between Coco Gauff and Elise Mertens that ended with the American winning 2-1 after two hours of play. Mertens came into the match on fire returning extremely well and hitting winners with ease. Gauff seemed stunned by the level she witnessed and she received a bagel.
Mertens lost only 10 points and took 22 minutes for the opening set. She started the 2nd set in the same tempo taking a quick 2-0 lead and it seemed like Gauff was on her way to London. However the American found some inspiration and fought back to make it 3-3. Disaster struck late in the 2nd set when she lost her serve at 4-4.
Mertens served for the match but got broken to make it 5-5. Gauff once again failed to win her serve and Mertens served once again for the match at 6-5 but got broken again. In the tiebreak Gauff finally found a breakthrough and won it with 7-4. The 3rd set was another stunning one where Mertens had a 4-2 lead.
But Gauff once again fought her way back to make it 4-4. The American then applied even more pressure on Mertens and the Belgian crumbled at 5-5 giving Gauff the 6-5 lead which she turned into a 7-5 3rd set victory.
