Swiatek comes back in sensational fashion to beat Watson in Eastbourne

Iga Swiatek kicked off her grass campaign with a stunning comeback against Heather Watson beating her 6-3 6-7(4) 7-5.

Iga Swiatek kicked off her grass season with a match against Heather Watson who is a tricky player to play on grass. The Polish player looked good early outhitting Watson from the baseline as she naturally possesses more powerful groundstrokes. The 2nd set featured a mighty battle where both players had chances.

It was Watson who struck first taking a 4-2 lead before Swiatek was able to pull it back to 4-4. Both players played well in the next few games and we ended up in a tiebreak. In it, it was the Brit who proved better winning it 7-4. Swiatek looked nervous and was not hitting her shots as precisely as earlier.

That allowed Watson to pretty quickly take a double break lead in the final set. The Brit was up 4-1 and had 40-0 in her service game to take a 5-1 lead. She allowed Iga to come back into the game which she ended up losing. That was the start of a 4-0 run for Swiatek with the Polish player leading 5-4 at the end of it.

Watson survived the next game to make it 5-5 but Swiatek ultimately won the set 7-5 winning the math as well. Watson completely collapsed mentally after allowing that 4-game run. A good start for Iga who openly said she was not focused on the grass season.
