16-year-old
Mirra Andreeva played another solid match but she didn't have enough to take down a relentless
Coco Gauff as the American won in three sets 6-7(5) 6-1 6-1.
It was a very interesting match between the two super-talented players but Gauff ultimately proved better mainly due to having more endurance and power in her game. Andreeva is still very young and she'll become strong in the future but her game right now is not very heavy, she doesn't have too much power in her game.
You need that to beat Gauff because she's so quick around the court that being able to track many balls and get them back. Andreeva has many solid shots in her game being able to create great angles but that only worked as long as Gauff was making mistakes. When the American eliminated the excess of errors from her game the match turned.
Gauff had more winners in the opening set but too many errors as she had 19 unforced errors which was a bit too much. She was much better in that regard in the second set having only 3. Andreeva tried some stuff but she ended up with 11 unforced errors and the set went to Gauff 6-1. The final one was equally impressive for Gauff as Andreeva really didn't have a good response to the American who raised her level quite a bit.
Gauff once again limited the errors, and kept the winners coming at a solid pace and that proved too much for the 16-year-old. A great experience for her and only great things are coming. For Gauff, a big win, an important one for her confidence which suffered a hit in recent weeks. She's now looking similar to the way she looked en route to the final run last year.
