Coco Gauff retires in round one of Cincinnati against Bouzkova due to injury

Coco Gauff is out of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati after retiring against Marie Bouzkova down 5-7 0-1.

Coco Gauff had a very long week in Toronto playing in the doubles final on Sunday winning it but she wasn't as fortunate in this one. The young American faced a very tricky opponent in Marie Bouzkova, one that keeps the ball in play and forces you to overhit trying to win the point. Some of that was on display in this match as well but ultimately a rolled ankle proved too much to overcome.

The American battled hard in this match and for a while, she had control of it. Dropping your serve in the first game of the match is not good but she was able to bounce back from that and take a 5-2 lead. At 5-3 disaster struck for Guaff who rolled her ankle and her play dropped off a cliff after that.

She lost that game and that was the start of a 4-0 run by Bouzkvoa who won the opening set 7-5. She broke Gauff in the first game of the 2nd set as well and the young American elected to retire. Fans are hoping the injury is not severe and she will be ready for the US Open.
