Nick Kyrgios made a winning return in Cincinnati beating Davidovich Fokina in straight sets 7-5 6-4.
It was an interesting match between two players who are very streaky with the match following that pattern. Kyrgios pressured Fokina early as the Spaniard struggled to find a good rhythm having played only one hard court match this summer before this one. As the match went on, Fokina found his game and was the first tone to threaten with a break.
Kyrgios saved that break chance and he upped his aggressiveness in the match. It was generally a slow start by the Australian as he mostly relied on his serve. As the match went on, so did Kyrgios up his play and it culminated towards the end. He broke Fokina at 5-5 and finished off the set 7-5.
The Spaniard had a lot of trouble on his serve as Kyrgios was able to find crucial winners with his return no less. The Australian was able to read the serve really well and it didn't change in the 2nd set. Fokina played an erratic first game losing it and allowing Kyrgios a 2-0 lead.
Fokina battled back but dropped his serve once more falling behind 2-4 and this time it was too much to overcome. Kyrgios relied on his serve to carry him to the finish line and it did. A solid start for Kyrgios who avoided the rain while only playing two sets.
