Coco Gauff missed the Olympic Games in Tokyo after contracting COVID-19 days ahead of her flight to Japan.
The American player was left devastated by the news of the positive diagnosis. She expressed disappointment at missing the games which were a longtime dream of hers but vowed to focus on recovering and coming back stronger. She did that by defeating Victoria Azarenka 6-3 6-1 in an exhibition match last night.
After the match she also revealed some lingering effects of the virus:
“I’m just happy that I didn’t have really many symptoms. I was pretty much asymptomatic. I just had – still have – a loss of smell. But other than that, I’m A-OK.”
Fans were relieved to know that Guaff did not experience any significant symptoms but the loss of smell is something Gauff still finds a way to get used to. She hopes to get it back soon enough. Asked if she got vaccinated she said:
“The real problem is just getting the dosages spaced out and,
obviously, going from country to country is difficult. But, I’m going to get it as soon as I can.”
