Coco Gauff stepped out for an early match at the National Bank Open in Montreal and the American bested Sevastova 6-1 6-4.
Sevastova is a very tough matchup for Gauff as they played three times so far with the Latvian winning all three of those matches. The odd thing about the matches usually was that Gauff would start off extremely well but falter as the match went on. Something similar happened today as the American once again came out strong.
She was blasting winners left and right with the Latvian unable to counter. A rather quick first set finished with Gauff winning it 6-1. The 2nd set followed the usual script of Gauff faltering which she did once more. Sevastova was able to take advantage of a lapse of focus by the young teenager.
She took a 3-0 lead and looked fairly comfortable. However, Gauff would come back strong winning 3 games in a row to make it 3-3. It was something that was not happening in the previous matches as the American succumbed to nerves. This time around she was the more composed one.
Sevastova got rattled by the loss of lead and suddenly found herself on the back foot losing her serve at 4-4. After that Gauff finished off the match with a 6-4 2nd set finish.
