Fabio Fognini enraged many by shouting an Italian homophobic slur during an Olympic Games match.
The Italian was talking to himself when he shouted the words presumably to himself with microphones on the court picking it up. Fognini was quick to apologize for using the homophobic slur explaining that the heat got to him. In his first match after the incident, Fognini decided to champion LGBT rights.
The Italian donned a rainbow-themed outfit where his traditional headband was coloured with rainbow colours as well as his sweatbands on each wrist. It was a curious gesture that caught a lot of attention but it showed Fognini's willingness to own his mistakes.
The Italian was able to come back from losing the opening set against Struff and win the match. It even included some medical issues for Fognini who did not feel well and had his blood pressure checked midway through the match. The Italian overcame all of that and moved to R2.
