Danielle Collins seems to have forgotten how to lose, as the American battled back from being a set down to overcome sixth seed Simona Halep and improve her winning streak to 12 consecutive matches.
Having captured back-to-back titles in Palermo and San Jose, Collins is showing no signs of slowing down as the World No.28 secured a 2-6 6-4 6-4 victory over her higher-ranked opponent. Having dropped out of the Top 10 for the first time since January 2014, the now 13th-ranked Halep appeared to be her dominant self in the first set. Employing patience and impeccable shot-making, Halep cruised through the first set as Collins was done in by several unforced errors.
However, the American was able to regroup in the second set, relying on her newfound confidence and explosive power from the baseline to trouble the former World No.1. After an exchange of breaks, Collins was able to clinch the second set with the raucous crowd split between both ladies.
The final set saw another exchange of breaks, as neither competitor seemed willing to concede to the other. However, it was Halep, who was playing in her first match on Tour since May, who faltered when serving to stay in the match at 4-5. After an almost three-hour encounter, it was the former champion who sent a forehand into the net, handing Collins a ticket to the next round.
Awaiting Collins in the round of 16 is compatriot Jessica Pegula, who also rallied from a set down to battle past 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova earlier that evening.
