Daniil Medvedev made a winning start in Vienna beating
Nikoloz Basilashvili easily in two sets 6-2 6-2.
Medvedev last played in Astana in Kazakhstan losing to Novak Djokovic in the semi-final. The loss came in a match that was really good and where he played really well. A pulled muscle forced him to retire before the start of the final set and he hasn't played since.
This match showed that he has not missed a beat as he easily cruised past Basilashvili who is having a horror season but he was pretty okay here. The standard performance with some great winners and some abysmal errors. He totalled 20 in the match.
Medvedev was very sturdy hitting 16 winners in 61 minutes of play and committing only 7 unforced errors. A very good practice match for the Russian who has high hopes for this final indoor stretch. Next up is Dominic Thiem, a player who will enjoy tremendous support in Vienna.
