Day 1 results Western & Southern Open WTA: Sharapova and Venus Williams continue, Konta out

The first day of the women's singles at the Western & Southern Open featured few interesting names. Monday's matches included Johanna Konta, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova.
Some tennis players performed better and others did. Both Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams managed to win their matches without any major problems, but that can not be said about Johanna Konta.
Venus Williams faced Lauren Davis in the first round of Cincinnati. The American had no major problems throughout the match and won with 7-5, 6-2.
Maria Sharapova also did not have the best series when she lost 3 games in a row, but this time she defeated Riske 6-3, 7-6(4).
1st round also included some minor surprises. Players like Johanna Konta, Anastasija Sevastova and Caroline Wozniacki lost their matches. The world no.14, no. 11 and no.19 did not manage to get through to the next round and so they can focus more on the upcoming US Open now.
