Bencic as fourth seed saved a set point in the first set; before defeating Julia Goerges in two tiebreaks to move into the Last Eight. She ended up winning 7-6, 7-6; in one hour 50 minutes.
Vekic came through a tough test against Maria Sakkari. The Greek ace moved through the first set 6-2; but the Croatian came back to claim the next two 7-5, 6-1.
She will next face Dayana Yastremska after Angelique Kerber retired due to a left hamstring injury during the second set of their tie; when the Ukrainian teenager was already leading 6-3, 2-0. It is unsure yet how serious the injury is or whether it is just a precaution with the Australian Open round the corner.
There were also victories for Sabalenka who edged past Bernarda Pera; next up is second seed Simona Halep in what is an excellent prospect for the Quarter-Finals. Also Danielle Rose Collins is through; after easing past fellow American, Sofia Kenin.
