Donna Vekic capped off her tremendous week in Courmayeur by winning the trophy of the 1st edition event over Tauson 7-6(3) 6-2.
Donna Vekic has been struggling all 2021 whether it's with injuries or results. The Croatian player is far off her best tennis and rarely, if at all, did she play it this season. It all changed this week in Italy with the Croatian stringing together some very good performances to win the trophy. The field was not the strongest admittedly but Vekic could only play who she played and she defeated everybody.
In the final, she met
Clara Tauson who has already a title to her name in 2021. The Danish player is one of the brighter talents on the WTA tour and usually does very well indoors. She did so this week by reaching the final but in the final, she was simply overmatched. Both of these players like to play attacking tennis but in a clash of those two styles Vekic was more consistent.
The first set started off with a lot of excitement as we saw 4 losses of serve in the first four games. Neither player was able to curb the aggressive nature of their opponent and after that, we were tied 2-2. Vekic was the better one moving forward taking a 4-2 lead but a few cheap errors gave Tauson a chance. She took it and made it 5-5. After that, we ended up in a tiebreak where Vekic dominated.
She took a 5-0 lead before closing it out with 7-3. The 2nd set was utter domination by Vekic who was simply too good at striking the ball from the baseline. Tauson could not keep out and most of her balls sailed wide which gave the Croatian an early lead. After that, she continued playing well eventually closing it out with 6-2.
