Anett Kontaveit did the unthinkable by winning the 2021 Transylvania Open over Simona Halep which sends her to Guadalajara for the WTA Finals.
No player on the WTA tour had a better finish to the season than Anett Kontaveit. The Estonian player won two titles before arriving in Cluj-Napoca in the final two months. The stakes upon arrival were high, if she won the event she would secure a spot at the WTA Finals where she never played before. Well, she did it by defeating Simona Halep 6-2 6-3 in the Transylvania Open final.
Kontaveit played amazing tennis all week long showing no sign of tiredness after a great title run in Moscow last week. The Estonian player once again played very well from the baseline attacking every shorter ball. She also was really good returning the ball sending it back really deep which troubled players all week long. Today was no different as Simona Halep struggled in the same manner many other players did.
The balls were coming in very deep and stellar consistency from the baseline allowed the Estonian to be more solid overall. She also find great serves when she needed to and that was more than enough to win the first set with 6-2. In the 2nd Simona found some early success taking a 2-0 lead but eventually the Estonian player found a way to come back.
Halep did not play as well as before sending too many balls wide while also failing to defend well. Her back might have troubled her as well but even so, Kontaveit was simply too good. She has been too good for the Tour for a couple of weeks now. This win sends her to the WTA Finals in Guadajalara instead of Jabeur who was set to become the first Arab women to play there.
