Finishing runner-up at any event is a remarkable achievement, but tennis player Marta Kostyuk was in tears as she dedicated her runner-up trophy to her family in Ukraine.
The World No.32 was in great form during the tournament, defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Jessica Pegula en route to the final. However, Kostyuk fell to British star Katie Boulter in a hotly-contested final, squandering a one set lead as Boulter escaped with the victory and title.
Despite her best attempt to remain composed, Kostyuk eventually succumbed to her emotions as she gave her speech while receiving the runner-up trophy. The 21-year old teared up as she dedicated the trophy to her family members, who are currently trapped in war-torn Ukraine.
"First of all everyone in the stands... Slava Ukraini," said Kostyuk. "I don't want to make it too sad, I want to say thank you to my family back home. It's been a difficult last couple of nights for Ukraine. My family is in Ukraine right now. I don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow. There's no one who sacrificed more for my career than them. I want to dedicate this small trophy to them."
