The 2022 tennis event in Monterrey will run from February 28th till March 6th with Elina Svitolina and Leylah Fernandez headlining the field.

Leylah Fernandez announced to the world last year in Monterrey that she is a very serious tennis player who needs to be taken seriously. A couple of months later she took a huge step forward by playing amazing tennis for a fortnight and reaching the US Open final. She is the defending champion of this event and has returned to defend the trophy.

The road begins with a 1st round matchup against Schmiedlova after which she might face either Zheng or Kalinskaya. It's a tough road but she will be up for the challenge. The number one seed is Elina Svitolina who is having a very poor start to the season. It will be hard for her to focus on tennis with what's been going on in the world but she will try.

Her road interestingly begins against Russian Potapove and that's a pretty interesting matchup generally considering the talent of both and the poor form recently. If she wins she will face either Parry or Tomova. Another interesting 1st round matchup is that between Keys and Martic. Keys disappointed in her first match since the Australian Open and she will look to better that here.
