Elena Rybakina arrived to Stuttgart in high spirits hoping for a good result but it didn't go well as she retired down 1-6 1-3 against
Beatriz Haddad Maia sending the Brazilian to the next round of the
Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
The Kazakh player played well for her country on clay a few days ago in the Billie Jean King Cup but she didn't do that well in this matchup. Haddad Maia had the advantage of playing here in the previous days as Germany was playing Brazil in this very venue and that advantage proved substantial as she smacked Rybakina 6-1 in the first set.
Rybakina took a MTO down 1-2 in the second set and after losing the next game she opted to retire due to an injury. It's not clear what went wrong for her but she really didn't play that well anyway.
