Hello! I'm Chris Evert. Only joking. The have known each other for over 50 years. Goodto have both these sporting icons at Delray Beach Tennis Center for BJK Cup
Chris Evert and Billie Jean King were both in Delray Beach watching Team USA defeat Team Austria in the competition named after the legendary King.
The event didn't only feature tennis matches as both of them were honoured as well. King who has been living in nearby Boca Raton for weeks received the ITF Excellence Award. It comes as King was part of 8 winning teams in what then was called the Federation Cup. Speaking at the occasion Evert noted of King:
“It’s her effect on women’s sports — not just women’s tennis. She’s probably the most driven person I’ve ever known in my life. Her vision was unbelievable when it came to women’s team sports. It was taboo 50 years ago to be a women’s athlete. It wasn’t admired. Now women can be proud to be an athlete and she changed that perception."
Evert was present there in a rare public appearance due to her battle with cancer which is the rearview window according to the legendary player. She further said:
“I’ve remained very close to Billie Jean and Martina (Navratilova), more than anyone else who played then. We’ve always stayed in touch. I see (Billie) at all the Grand Slams. We have such a friendship where over the years we can finish each other's sentences. We all know what we’ve both been through."
