Emma Navarro and
Amanda Anisimova have advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 500
Queen's Club Championships. Both Americans overcame tough opponents to kick off their grass-court swing, guaranteeing a new head-to-head clash next Thursday, where Anisimova holds a 3-0 lead in their rivalry.
Navarro exacted revenge on
Beatriz Haddad Maia, coming from behind to win 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-3. The 24-year-old had fallen to the Brazilian just weeks prior – also in three sets – in the quarterfinals of the Strasbourg Open. Navarro's spot in the Top 10 was at risk with an early defeat, but advancing to the quarterfinals secured her privileged ranking.
This time, the world No. 10 seemed to have one foot out of the tournament. She started by losing her serve twice consecutively, with Haddad Maia taking a commanding 4-0 lead in a set where Navarro won only 32% of her service points. In the second set, she even saved a match point at 4-5 before orchestrating a remarkable comeback.
On the other side, Anisimova faced little trouble against local wildcard
Sonay Kartal – who was coming off one of the best wins of her career, having defeated world No. 16 Daria Kasatkina. Anisimova was particularly effective on return, winning 59% of return points throughout the match, in addition to a solid 63% on her serve. The American dominated from the start and sealed a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory in just an hour and five minutes of play.
With the victories of Anisimova (No. 15) and Navarro (No. 10), an all-American showdown is set for a semifinal spot. Currently, Anisimova leads their head-to-head 3-0, with their last encounter being in early April in the Charleston semifinals, where Anisimova defeated her compatriot in straight sets.
