Emma Navarro had been handing the initiative to Qinwen Zheng for the last WTA Finals spot with her own poor form in recent weeks and has done so with a withdrawal.

Navarro will not play at the Ningbo Open which starts today (Monday) and was a late withdrawal due to illness. She has suffered early defeats in both Beijing and Wuhan and even in attempting to gain further points in between at the Hong Kong Open failed to do so.

That tournament but the WTA 250 version is her likely last chance and if she is able to get a wildcard similar to the 125k edition, it will likely be a last chance saloon. But it is also a blow to the Ningbo Open who also had Jasmine Paolini who is top seed withdraw through the night. Jessica Pegula also withdrew over the weekend likely owing to qualifying already for the WTA Finals.

“Unfortunately, I have to pull out of the Ningbo Open. I've had such amazing weeks here in China, and the fans have been incredible. I'm so thankful and happy for all the love and support I’ve received and all the wonderful people I’ve met. I promise I’ll do my best to come back for the Ningbo Open next year. Big thanks for all the support! See you soon!,” wrote Paolini.
