Emma Raducanu’s fairytale run at the US Open has earned her a nomination for the 2022 Laureus Sports Awards.
Emma Raducanu has yet to produce a good result following her fairytale US Open run a few months ago but the Brit is still polarizing the wider sports public despite a lack of great results. The latest honour for the Brit comes in the form of a nomination for a very prestigious sports award.
The 19-year-old is in the running for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award along with fellow tennis professional Daniil Medvedev – who won the men’s US Open title – Barcelona and Spain footballer Pedri, athletes Neeraj Chopra and Yulimar Rojas, and swimmer Ariarne Titmus.
Raducanu’s historic run at Flushing Meadows saw her win 10 matches without dropping a set en route to becoming the first qualifier – man or woman – to win a Grand Slam. The teenager was only 18 when she won her maiden major and the US Open was only her second Grand Slam event.
