There has been some controversy regarding wild card entries at major tennis events, particularly at Grand Slams. Former WTA No.1
Chris Evert seems to have made her stance clear, according to a recent post on social media.
Wild card entries have often been handed out to tennis players at the discretion of tournament organizers. There has been no definitive rule on the criteria for receiving these entries. In the past, tournament officials have made the decision based on a player's nationality, success at the event and even popularity. The last factor has played a major role in these selections, as the aim often lies in attracting fans/media attention and selling tickets.
However, there has been recent uproar as fans believe some well-known players receive entries based on their history and name along, taking a spot away from deserving stars. Examples include the likes of veterans Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and others receiving wild card entries regardless of their recent ranking and performance.
Retired American star Chris Evert seemed to agree with this notion, as she took to social media to cosign a statement made on the decision to hand out these wildcard entries.
"Personal take on WCs in GS: these events are supposed to be the pinnacles of the sport so u shouldn’t get a pass and even less one due to your nationality. Keep path for limited exceptions for top players or players w/ outstanding achievements in GS. Reciprocal WCs need to stop," wrote a fan on Twitter.
"Totally agree", responded Evert.
