A new sensational doubles pairing is rising as Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend are continuing to win matches in Madrid and book a semi-final at the Madrid Open.
They started playing doubles this year and it proved to be a very good decision as they made the final in Miami. They're pretty close to another one in Madrid after rolling past Hsieh and Strycova who made their return to the tour after a long time. It was a very interesting match and proof once more that this partnership between Fernandez and Townsend is here to stay.
They smashed their opponents in the first set serving a very rare doubles bagel. It was an utterly impressive showing from the Canadian - American combo who had some minor issues in the second set. They allowed their opponents to break them in the second set and take a 3-1 lead but they also battled back from that.
At 5-4, they saved a set point with the set eventually ending in a tiebreak which Townsend and Fernandez dominated taking it 7-3. A good run to the semi-finals and a chance for another WTA 1000 final for the duo.
