Leylah Fernandez contested yet another grand slam final and once again she was beaten in the final as Hsiegh and Wang win the 2023 Roland Garros (French Open) trophy.
Townsend and Fernandez have proven themselves as one of the better doubles teams in the world and they certainly played like that for much fo this event. Beating good teams including Gauff and Pegula en route to the final saw them grow as a pairing and also become more confident. It was certainly on display in the final when they opened up against the super-experienced Hsieh and her much younger partner Wang.
The opening set was a proper beatdown by the American - Canadian combo as they smashed their opponents 6-1. They were just flying around the court and hitting great shots totalling 13 winners. The second set was a bit different as their opponents stepped up quite a bit but we also saw them struggle a bit. Once again they were the ones with more winners but also more errors. It was a close set, one that the American-Canadian combo could have won but eventually in the tiebreak it was the experience that prevailed.
The final set was pretty anti-climactic as they fell apart. Not enough winners, far too many errors and simply a lack of creativity. Their opponents knew exactly what to do to win the match and Fernandez and Townsend never adjusted to that. It was just a painful end to two really strong weeks Another trophy for Hsieh in doubles, who has been doing this for a very long time. She's still got though.
